It’s really sad to acknowledge that in today’s world hundreds of women in rural parts of India are branded as witches and quite a scary percentage of them are killed.

If not killed then they are thrown out of the village, no one interferes usually, if they do, mostly that is futile because sooner or later the villagers have their way.

The reason behind this sometimes is superstition or personal enmity but mostly it is greed- greed on the property of the family/woman or the woman herself, is not it the cheesy way?

You don’t have to do anything but trigger the fear in handful of villagers that the goats or hens falling sick because of black magic, and that black magic is being practiced by who else?……

Same arm-twisting can be applied to a woman who won’t surrender to lecherous movements.

The superstition is so rigid and strong that nothing can be done in hurry but something must be done. The sooner a firm movement to help people understand the truth starts the better it will be for these hapless women.

  1. Thank You, Sharmishtha, for bringing these intolerable practices to light… There may not be anything ‘immediate’ that can be done except to highlight the plight of these woman. It has to start somewhere…!

  2. although both are wrong the persecution of women for refusing to obey and the persecution of women for holding magical beliefs in contraradicition to local religion are far from precisely congruent
