When men appointed by contractors reached the small village Reni in Uttarakhand on 25th March 1974 Niluribhur forest to chop down trees, which was authorized by government they did not even imagined protest because men of that small village were away in Chamoli town to collect compensation for the land that has been acquired for army.

The minute they were alerted a group of over two dozen women led by Gaura Devi rushed to the site and hugged the trees in order to save them from felling. They stayed undaunted in the face of threats from contractors, eventually they succeeded in chasing them away, not only that they pulled down the concrete bridge that reached their village so that they don’t play any mischief before their men returned.

The news spread and it became a great movement all over the country. The sad part is the actual persons were deprived…
