In 1970s environmentalists made history, they stopped Kerala Government’s hydel project on Kunthipuza river that cuts through silent valley and sealed the valley from development projects.
The save silent valley stir ended in 1983 and is a prime example of people’s resistance to destructive projects. Herpetologist Romulus Whitaker was among the first to write of the valley’s richness and the need to protect it.
All political parties wanted the project so a group of environmentalists came together and wrote an assessment- the pros and cons of the project. Even then it took government ten years to declare it as a protected area.
Quite a feather in the crown for those who care for the planet.
