Everybody says that they don’t happen in India, not anymore! But, newspapers once in a while by mistake publish news about starvation death, not one or two (forget them, they are not fit to be published, who cares about those wasting away in slums, pavements without food, medical facilities, they die then the corporation truck comes for them and burns them in pyres or buries them in anonymous graves)!
When the number increases one, two or more and when they are not the only ones starving, a whole village like amlashol or that! Amlashol was the first slap on conscience of Bengalis, we were living in a blissful world thinking that no one dies by starvation in communist Bengal, well they did, by dozens, and one wonders if they have been brushed under carpet or finally saved by someone! Indians are so good with brushing things under carpet or making them disappear that you can’t really trust what they publish, say and you can’t go to check!
Though that village shook the core of our ex regime but starvation death stayed, even a couple of years back news popped up about villages where people can manage one half square meal a day!
What is shining you said, India?
