When we leave school, college we for a few naïve seconds think that bullying is over, finally we are above bullying. Then we realize that we were wrong. Bullies are everywhere, they rule the world by banding together, brandishing their fists and more.
Recently I was reading some news items about Khap Panchayats (before that it was shiv sena in other parts of the country and political parties in my west Bengal; they are still there fully active but right now the limelight is on Khap Panchayats) and their weird orders, their insane tendency to control every sphere of lives of others including their personal lives.
First question that will come to your mind is what is khap panchayat? Well, Khap panchayat is the union of a few villages mainly in north India; it exists in similar forms in the rest of the country too. Lately they have emerged as quasi-judicial bodies that pronounce harsh punishments based on age-old customs and traditions, often bordering on regressive measures to modern problems.
Won’t say much, just a few headlines that caught my attention, the reaction was not funny I will admit, actually it made me furious to think that how these people (using different methods) trespass in the places where they don’t have any authority to go.
Haryana khap blames consumption of chowmein blaming it for the growing incidents of rapes in haryana.
Haryana khap seek ban on weddings at night to curb down drunk driving and accidents caused by drunk revelers.
Haryana khap demands legalization of child marriage to curb growing incident of rapes in the state.
Honour Killings have been reported from those areas the most where the Khap Panchayats are active. Since the last six years the Khap Panchayats have been providing the fuel and fodder for such heinous crimes.
Next comes the million dollar question! Why are not these activities banned? The answer is one- very predictable one, votebank.
